A Splitwise alternative for couples

Splitwise is great for keeping track between friends or flatmates. On the free plan, though, it limits how many expenses you can add per day and shows ads. WeZioo is the free app built for two: no ads, no limit on expenses, and who owes what at 50/50, by income or custom.

What Splitwise does really well

  • Groups for everything

Friends, flatshares, trips: Splitwise tracks several groups at once and what everyone owes the others.

  • Every way to split

Equal shares, unequal amounts, percentages or shares: each expense is split the way you want.

  • Simplified balances

Debt simplification cuts the number of repayments in a group, and the app handles more than 100 currencies.

  • Everywhere, even on the web

Splitwise is available on iPhone, Android and in a browser. WeZioo has no web version.

Where a couple needs something else

Splitwise is designed for groups keeping score between themselves. A couple follows a shared budget month after month, and three things matter more.

  1. 01

    Adding expenses without counting

On the free plan, Splitwise limits the number of new expenses per day. Its official help centre suggests upgrading to Pro, waiting for the next day or asking a friend to add the expense. WeZioo has no limit on expenses, even for free.

  2. 02

    A rule that applies itself

Splitwise lets you split by percentage, but default splits are part of Splitwise Pro. In WeZioo, your rule (50/50, by income or custom) applies to every expense, for free, and stays adjustable case by case.

  3. 03

    Shared and private

A couple often has a joint account and expenses that are nobody else's business. WeZioo handles both, for free, without turning every purchase into a tab between you.

Is 50/50 fair when your incomes differ?

Splitwise can split an expense by percentage. You still need the right percentage: here is what the rule changes for a typical couple.

Camille earns €2,400 net a month, Hugo €1,600. Their rent is €900 and groceries and bills cost them €600: €1,500 of shared costs every month.

50/50

Camille · 50%Hugo · 50%

€750€750

Each pays €750. For Camille, that is about 31% of her income; for Hugo, almost 47%. Camille has €1,650 left, Hugo €850.

By income (60/40)

Camille · 60%Hugo · 40%

€900€600

Camille pays €900, Hugo €600. Each puts 37.5% of their income into shared costs. Camille has €1,500 left, Hugo €1,000.

No rule is right for everyone: some couples prefer 50/50, others an income-based split, others a mix depending on the expense. What matters is choosing it together, then never doing the maths by hand again.

Run the numbers with your incomes

Joint account or not, everyone pays their share

In WeZioo, you pick your rule once (50/50, by income or custom) and adjust it on a single expense when needed. The app works out who owes what as the month goes on, and the Balance button brings everything back to zero.

Got a joint account? It has its place in the app, next to your private expenses, for free. You also track budgets by category, with what is left to spend this month, and your shared savings goals.

When to stay on Splitwise

For a group of friends, a big flatshare or a trip where everyone pays for things along the way, Splitwise remains a very good tool, and its web version helps people who do not have the app. Nothing stops you from keeping Splitwise for your friends and WeZioo for your couple.

WeZioo also handles trips: a separate budget, several currencies, other couples or friends invited, and settling up at the end of the stay (one trip included for free). But its home ground is your life together, month after month.

Switch from Splitwise to WeZioo in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Install the app

WeZioo is free on iPhone and Android. You can start on your own: your partner joins whenever they like.

  2. 02

    Invite your partner

A link or a code is all it takes. Your shared expenses show up for both of you, with a notification when the other adds one.

  3. 03

    Choose your rule

50/50, by income or custom. WeZioo works out who owes what every month, no spreadsheet needed.

WeZioo does not import Splitwise data: start from the current month, it is often the simplest way.

Frequently asked questions

Is Splitwise still free?

Yes, but the free plan limits the number of new expenses per day and shows ads. Splitwise Pro, a paid plan, removes the limit and the ads.

Does Splitwise work for couples?

It works, especially if you already use it with friends. But it is built for groups: it is not designed around a joint account or private expenses, and default splits require Pro. For a budget for two, WeZioo is made for exactly that.

Can you split by income on Splitwise?

You can split each expense by percentage, as long as you know the right percentage; saving it as the default is part of Pro. WeZioo calculates the split from your incomes and applies it to every shared expense, for free.

Is WeZioo free?

Yes, with no ads and no limit on expenses: 50/50 or income-based split, who owes what, joint account, private expenses, budgets by category and CSV export. WeZioo+ (€4.99/month or €29.99/year) adds advanced options, with a single subscription for both of you.

Does my partner need to install the app?

To share expenses, yes: they join you with a link or a code. But you can start on your own and add expenses before they arrive.
