A joint account, but who puts in how much?
Opening a joint account is the easy part. Deciding what each of you pays in, then sticking to it month after month, is where the questions start. Three situations come up again and again.
- 01
Your incomes are different
Paying in the same amount sounds simple, but the partner who earns less gives up a bigger slice of their salary. Splitting by income evens it out, as long as someone does the maths, and redoes it when a salary changes.
- 02
Not everything goes through the joint account
Rent comes out of the joint account, but one of you buys groceries on a personal card and the other picks up the restaurant bill. By the end of the month, nobody knows where the balance stands.
- 03
You don't have a joint account
That is a perfectly reasonable choice. You just need to know who paid for what, and which transfer puts you back on an even footing.
How WeZioo tracks your joint account
Your joint account has its place in the app
Rent, groceries, bills: you enter shared expenses once and they show up for both of you. Your partner gets a notification when you add one.
Private expenses stay separate
What each of you spends on yourself stays in your private expenses, next to the shared ones. The joint account and private expenses are both free.
Your rule, adjustable
50/50, by income or custom: you choose it once and adjust it on a single expense when needed.
Who owes what, worked out for you
When one of you has paid more than their share, WeZioo sees it. The Balance button creates the transfer that brings everything back to zero.

How much should each of you pay into the joint account?
Split by income, the maths fits on one line: each of you pays in the same proportion of your net income.
A's share = shared costs × A's net income ÷ (A's net income + B's net income)
Example: you earn €2,900 net, your partner €2,100, and your shared costs are €1,800 a month. Split by income, you pay in €1,044 and your partner €756 (58% and 42%). At 50/50, it would be €900 each. Change the amounts to see your own case.

Your fair split

With a strict 50/50, your partner would pay €144 more every month. The proportional split adapts to each income.
Three habits to keep the split fair
- Use the same basis for both of you: net income, calculated the same way on each side.
- Spread bonuses over the year instead of redoing everything in the month they land.
- Review the split when an income changes: new job, part-time work, parental leave.
With or without a joint account, it's your call
There is no single right way to organise things. Here are the three most common setups, and what WeZioo does in each.
One joint account and two personal ones
Each of you transfers your share every month, shared costs come out of the joint account and the rest lives in your personal accounts. WeZioo tells you how much each of you pays in and tracks what leaves the joint account.
No joint account
Each of you pays by card, one covers the rent, the other the groceries. WeZioo adds it up, applies your rule and tells you who owes what. One transfer and you're even.
A bit of both
The big costs go through the joint account, everyday spending through personal cards. Both are tracked in the same app, and WeZioo works out who owes what as the month goes on.
What WeZioo doesn't do
WeZioo does not replace your bank: no bank account, no card, no IBAN. To open a joint account, you go to your bank. After that, you enter your expenses and WeZioo does the maths: each partner's share, what is left to spend by category, and who owes what.
Free, and one subscription for the two of you
The joint account, private expenses, the income-based split and who owes what are all free, with no ads and no limit on expenses.
WeZioo+ adds, among other things, automatic recurring expenses (rent, subscriptions, insurance), custom categories and an AI monthly summary: €4.99 a month or €29.99 a year, one subscription for the couple, with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does WeZioo open a joint account?
No. WeZioo is not a bank: the app does not open accounts and provides no card or IBAN. It helps you track the joint account you already have, or manage without one, by working out each partner's share.
Do we need a joint account to use WeZioo?
No. Without a joint account, each of you pays by card, you enter the shared expenses, and the app applies your split rule to tell you who owes what.
How do you work out each partner's share by income?
Multiply the shared costs by one partner's net income, then divide by the total of both net incomes. With incomes of €2,900 and €2,100 and €1,800 of costs, that gives €1,044 and €756. WeZioo applies this calculation to every expense.
Can I start before my partner joins the app?
Yes. You can start on your own and enter your first expenses. Your partner joins whenever they like, with an invite link or code.
Are private expenses mixed in with the joint account?
No. Private expenses are kept separate, next to the joint account ones. Like the joint account, they are free.
Is WeZioo free?
Yes: no ads and no limit on expenses, joint account and private expenses included. WeZioo+ is optional, at €4.99 a month or €29.99 a year for both of you.
Where is our data stored?
In Europe. WeZioo is designed in France and your data is hosted in Europe.
